Horse Herd awaiting Coloring

What is Raku?

RakuRaku started out as a quick method of Japanese potters to pull out the fired ware and reload the kiln. It was during one of the many wars they had way back when and by accident they found beautiful designs happened on the surface of hot ware dumped into straw, leaves, etc. while still hot. The raku I use is an Americanized version in which metalic glazes are added then the ware is taken from the kiln at 1800 or 2000 degrees and placed into a combustible material (I use dried manure) within the confines of an air tight container (I use metal cans).

After a certain amount of time in the atmosphere (30 seconds to 3 minutes) a cover is added so that the oxygen burns out and the metallic glaze develops in the oxygen free environment. You can get great effects by allowing a small amount of oxygen back in for a second or two or by lacing the combustibles with extra chemicals. Once the can is cold I can then retrieve my treasures...and it's always a surprise!!! I have to clean off the ashes and on some, I add a custom color to the cracks that develop. The custom crackle surface that I offer is done in a regular kiln that I open several times during cool down...this crackles the glaze surface and I then apply a chosen color to the surface, let it settle into the cracks, then wipe off the excess...Voila...another beauty!
