Catherine Linfield, BFA
Biography/Artist's Statement
Like artists before me, I would draw before I could talk. In grade one, I would take my new paper and at recess I would head for the nearby woods to sit out the rest of the day and make "art". Art school was not an option when I graduated grade 12. So I married, raised a family and occasionally drew or painted with my sons. When the boys were able to fend for themselves after school, (16 and 14), I gathered up what I had been working on for a couple years and applied for admittance to Mount Allison Universitys' Art Program. My work was good enough to put me into second year, and with several bursaries for education, and the Dean's list credits (all 3 years), and some summer classes, I was able to graduate in three years.
Over the next few years I received two art grants from the province, had shows at reputable galleries and started my own Gallery where I taught art.
In 2005, I experimented with a new style of painting. The woodgrain of plywood appeared to have images right in the grain....natures own drawings. I developed a way of allowing the image in the woodgrain to show, and to enhance the negative parts with glazes, gold foil, extra carvings of wood, etc. I have searched the internet for several years now, looking at art, and have never seen anything like what I am doing.
I see body parts and eyes, human and animal, all staring back at me. It's just a matter of darkening the background to let my audience see these wonders as well.
The main image I go looking for is of women, damaged women.....Not in the popular sense of wanting a boob lift or a nose job, but of women who have suffered polio, amputation, burn scars, thalidomide. Women who have learned to live with their physical differences and got on with their lives. And from resolve comes beauty and dignity. The surface of my paintings is beautiful as most of us try to be on our surfaces. My women are strong, dignified, and lovely.
